Snow White Puts Up A Fight In 'Mirror Mirror'

Lily Collins tells MTV News her Snow is a 'young woman who found out that she can save a prince as much as a prince can save her.'

If you're looking for a fun, fantastical, family-friendly movie to see this weekend, Tarsem's "Mirror Mirror" has you covered. The visually appealing and star-studded film is a new spin on an old classic, featuring an exuberant "man child" of a prince played by Armie Hammer, Oscar winner Julia Roberts as an unhealthily vain Evil Queen and Lily Collins as a more independent and self-assured Snow White.

When MTV News caught up with Roberts and Collins recently, we asked them to explain how their characters differ from the familiar fairy-tale mold.

"I think she's deeply misunderstood," Roberts said of her Evil Queen. "And I think she is correct in her ambition and drive and desire and focus to annihilate Snow White. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that. She's clear," she joked. "She's exacting."

Collins explained that her Snow White is not your typical damsel in distress. "She really becomes a fighter, emotionally and physically, and turns into this young woman who found out that she can save a prince as much as a prince can save her," she said. "She really becomes this fighter, and I got to swordfight and fence and wrestle and do all these cool things that you don't normally associate with a princess."

Speaking of fighters and swordfights, we couldn't help but ask for the castmembers' opinions on the fact that another Snow White-centric film, "Snow White and the Huntsman," will be hot on the heels of "Mirror Mirror" when it opens June 1 and how it might fare against their film.

"I'm interested to see what they did," Hammer admitted. "I think what we did is make a movie that's family-friendly. The parents are going to go to it and enjoy it almost as much as the kids are. Plus our movie kicks that movie's ass, let's be honest," he added with a grin. "Yeah. And we're out first. And we're gonna kick their ass!" he joked, clearly not concerned with competing against "Huntsman." "We're gonna make so much more money than they are! Our Rotten Tomatoes score is gonna be so much higher."

Check out everything we've got on "Mirror Mirror."

'Anchorman' Sequel A Go, Will Ferrell Says

Ferrell makes official announcement in costume as newsman Ron Burgundy on Conan O'Brien.

It's time to get classy again, San Diego. Will Ferrell confirmed on Wednesday night that the long-awaited sequel to his 2004 comedy, "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," is a go.

Ferrell, appearing as leisure-suit wearing newsman Ron Burgundy, broke the news while making a surprise appearance on the "Conan" show that thrilled the audience. Taking the stage in a, yes, burgundy suit and wide, striped tie, Ferrell/Burgundy, ripped off a wicked flute solo, then explained to host Conan O'Brien, "I like to keep my chops up, jam with the cats here ... smoke a little tea afterwards, see if a little backstage Judy ends up on my lap."

After complimenting the host on his broadcasting skills, Burgundy shared one small criticism with O'Brien. "You look awful," he said. "You look like someone put a bright red fright wig on a skeleton and chucked it out of a helicopter."

But Burgundy wasn't just there to play the flute and insult his host, he also had an exciting bit of news. "I want to announce this to everyone here in the Americas," he said. "To my friends, in Spain, Turkey and the U.K., including England ... as of 0900 Mountain Time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Aaron Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel for 'Anchorman.' It is official, there will be a sequel to 'Anchorman.'"

And with that, Burgundy played himself off the stage with a second wicked flute solo. Back in early 2010, "Anchorman" director and co-writer Adam McKay
told MTV News that he expected much of the first movie's cast to come along for the sequel, including Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, as well as Christina Applegate, David Koechner, Chris Parnell and Fred Willard.

"We had an idea and we contacted Steve and Paul and Koechner and Christina and checked in with everyone and they were all game for it," McKay said at the time. "It's a tricky movie because everyone went and did really well after it, so everyone's prices went up and everyone's time got a little more valuable. But at the same time, graciously, Steve and Paul and everyone agreed to cut their price to come and do it, which you don't see very often in Hollywood — and cut their price substantially."

The original grossed more than $91 million worldwide. Ferrell and McKay will once again co-write for the sequel and McKay will direct again, with production slated to begin at the end of this year for a 2013 release.

Are you looking forward to a sequel to "Anchorman"? Let us know in the comments below!

'Anchorman 2': The Legend Of Ron Burgundy's Return

MTV News brings you a timeline of all the obstacles that once stood in the way of the now-greenlit sequel.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

Movie fans were overjoyed by Will Ferrell's announcement Wednesday night that "Anchorman 2" is finally happening.

The long journey since the release of the first film left us doubting whether a sequel would ever happen. With our doubts cast aside and our excitement on the rise, we've compiled a timeline of all the obstacles the team overcame to arrive at the ultimate destination.

August 14, 2008: Paul Rudd tells us he thinks "Anchorman" director Adam McKay and actor Will Ferrell were interested in doing a sequel. "Last I heard they were starting to write ['Anchorman 2']," Rudd says. The setting? Possibly the '80s or the moon.

May 27, 2009: Ferrell tells Aussie radio DJs Jono & Dana that he'll be meeting with the "Anchorman" creators to "figure out when and how" to get a sequel in the works.

August 28, 2009: In an interview with Empire magazine, "Anchorman" producer Judd Apatow suggests that in "Anchorman 2," Ron Burgundy, Brick Tamland and Brian Fantana will return as elderly men. "Those anchormen sometimes have their jobs until they're 75 years old," Apatow says.

September 1, 2009: Director McKay says that, due to the cast and crew's busy schedules, the sequel won't be available for another two years. He adds, "But we are definitely doing it." Whew.

April 6, 2010: Steve Carell confirms to our very own Josh Horowitz that the "Anchorman" cast "want[s] to do another one," but there is no script. "I don't think they've [even] decided on a story line yet," Carell says.

April 8, 2010: On the red carpet for his movie "Date Night," Carell lies about everything. He says "Anchorman 2" has already been shot in "just two days" while the cast was drunk. When asked if it was any good he says, "It's fantastic!" Honestly, with the talent in these comedians, we wouldn't be surprised if it was.

April 27, 2010: Adam McKay reveals that, aside from the actor's schedules, another holdup in the sequel is payment. Since the cast went on to become even more famous after the first movie, "Everybody's prices went up." Graciously, the cast agreed to take a pay cut, which is almost unheard of in Hollywood.

April 29, 2010: McKay dashes all our hopes and dreams in a single tweet: "So bummed. Paramount basically passed on Anchorman 2. Even after we cut our budget down. We tried."

May 3, 2010: Hope is restored! As it turns out, Paramount is eager to film the sequel. Deadline reports, however, the "Anchorman" team is forced to regroup as they have a budget gap of $30 million to overcome.

June 6, 2010: With financial issues in the way, Paul Rudd jokes that if "Anchorman 2" doesn't happen, "We'll look to do 'Anchorman 3.' "

July 19, 2010: Yet again, it seems as if "Anchorman 2" is never going to happen. The saddest part? Neither is the proposed "Anchorman" musical. A few days later, Christina Applegate says she feels let down by the news.

May 2, 2011: All hope is officially lost when Ferrell tells Collider that the sequel "is a brick wall right now" and they're "playing around with the idea" of a "Step Brothers" sequel instead.

And suddenly...

March 28, 2012: Ferrell announces on "Conan" that "Anchorman 2" is officially happening with the original director, Adam McKay, and most of the principal castmembers, including Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. The stars have aligned. It's finally happening. Cue celebration!

Check out everything we've got on "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy."

But every once in a while, it still manages to produce one of those unstoppable hit albums that give everyone that good old feeling. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Rolling in the Deep" id="vid:604336" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>This year's model is <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/adele/artist.jhtml">Adele</a>'s <I>21</I>, which not only sold more copies than any other album in the U.S. in 2011 (more than 5.6 million to date), but which has also moved the most units of any artist since 2004. According to a <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/27/us-adele-idUSTRE7BQ10V20111227" target="_blank"><I>Reuters</I> report</a>, those gaudy figures (which top 15 million worldwide) make the British songbird the first artist to cross the 5 million mark in one year since Usher did it with his fourth studio album, <I>Confessions</I>, which sold 7.9 million units more than seven years ago. </P><P> </P><P>And to think she did it by releasing just two mega singles, <a href="/news/articles/1675976/adele-rolling-in-the-deep-best-song-2011.jhtml">"Rolling in the Deep"</a> and "Someone Like You," and barely touring North America due to <a href="/news/articles/1674453/adele-throat-surgery-recovery.jhtml">recurring vocal issues.</a>&#8232; </P><P> </P><P>There have been other big hits along the way to Adele's mark, including Eminem selling more than 3.4 million copies of his comeback <I>Recovery</I> album last year and Taylor Swift taking the honors in 2009 with <I>Fearless</I>, which sold 3.2 million copies. But none have come as close to Usher's mark in the interim. </P><P> </P><P>There doesn't seem to be any chance Adele will be surpassed by the end of the year: The closest contenders are Lady Gaga's <I>Born This Way</I> (2.08 million) and Michael Bubl&#233;'s <I>Christmas</I> (2.4 million). The other good news is that overall music sales are expected to be up slightly (3 percent) by the end of this year, marking the first time that's happened since 2004.</p>

Do Foo Fighters Know Robert Pattinson From Robert Plant?

During band's rehearsal break for Sunday's Movie Awards, we put Foos to the test.
By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

<P><b>UNIVERSAL CITY, California</b> &#8212; Hard rock, heavy metal, hardcore and punk have long gone hand-in-hand with evil wizards, magic, vampires and werewolves. And with a collective sub-cultural pedigree that includes stints in the Germs, No Use for a Name, Sunny Day Real Estate, Scream and some band called Nirvana, you'd think the <a href="/music/artist/foo_fighters/artist.jhtml">Foo Fighters</a> &#8212; set to perform at Sunday's <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/movieawards/2011/">Movie Awards</a> &#8212; would know their "Potter" from their Zeppelin. Florence Welch Inspired By Evil Queen Ravenna For 'Snow White' Track

Welch says she got a lot of material for 'Breath of Life' from Charlize Theron's beautifully wicked character.
By James Montgomery

When Florence Welch was asked to write a song for the upcoming "Snow White and the Huntsman" soundtrack, she was given the opportunity to watch a select few scenes from the film itself ... and almost automatically, she found herself drawing inspiration from a rather unlikely source: Namely, Charlize Theron's wicked Queen Ravenna.

"The Queen is just this incredible character; so hungry for life but so dead inside. She's sort of eternal, but inside there's nothing. She's kind of like charcoal or something," Welch told MTV News on Thursday (March 29). "[There are] these amazing scenes where she's kind of picking out birds' hearts and eating them. [She has] this thirst for youth and for life, but for what kind of life? This darkness, but she's so beautiful, so it's this kind of juxtaposition between beauty and, ultimately, death."

So, in a bit of a, uh, non-traditional move, Welch ended up writing a song called "Breath of Life," which is sung very much from the perspective of the Queen herself ("I got a lot of material from her!" she laughed. "Beauty, death, life ... it was pushing all of my buttons.") So you can imagine her surprise when, after submitting the song, she found herself sitting in London's Abbey Road studio, watching it all come together under the care of famed composer James Newton Howard.

"We went in and demoed the track, these big, clattering drums, huge bass sounds and everything was very intense ... and then we sent that to the guys in L.A. who composed it. And it was amazing to see the music we played being turned into this amazing orchestral thing," Welch laughed. "You feel in a bit of a way like you're kind of making it up as you go along, and then when you see it done, laid out before you in such a beautiful, orchestral fashion, it's really incredible. And then we all went into Abbey Road and it was one of the best days of my life; I love choirs and I love choral music, and there was a 60-piece choir singing the vocal parts that I had written. When the baritones came in, I nearly wept, it was so emotional."

And thanks to all that, in a still-growing career that's seemingly one highlight after the next, Welch said that writing and recording "Breath" was perhaps her favorite moment to date. Even if the whole 60-member choir thing did give her management team palpitations.

"My manager was looking at me going 'Do not get used to this. We cannot afford this 60-piece choir!' " she laughed. "It was just wonderful. Me and Isa [Summers, Welch's Machine partner, and co-writer of the track] were in there, these young women who made music for love, but with not much money or much reason. ... It was a really proud day for us. And, musically, for the composers at Universal to have understood the song and see it played out so beautifully, it was an amazing day. We felt a bit proper."

Whitney Houston And Michael Jackson's Deaths: Gone Too Soon

'You will always remember where you were ... when you heard the news,' Simon Cowell says, echoing the sentiments after Jackson's death.
By Tomika L. Anderson

<P>Few people will forget where they were when they heard that the King of Pop, <a href="/news/articles/1614744/michael-jackson-dies-at-50.jhtml">Michael Jackson, had died</a> in June 2009. And now, the same can be said for 1980s and '90s <a href="/news/articles/1679029/whitney-houston-dead.jhtml">Queen of Pop Whitney Houston</a>. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Celebrities React To Whitney Houston's Passing" id="vid:733106.id:1679030" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>The beloved, long-suffering singer died Saturday inside a Beverly Hills hotel room, hours before she was expected to attend a <a href="/news/articles/1679046/whitney-houston-dies-grammys-clive-davis.jhtml">pre-Grammy Awards party thrown by her longtime mentor Clive Davis</a>. </P><P> </P><P>And while the official cause of death is yet unknown &#8212; what's been speculated so far is that <a href="/news/articles/1679049/whitney-houston-dies-details.jhtml">Houston may have drowned</a> in the bathtub after taking prescription drugs, including Xanax &#8212; given her very public struggle with substance abuse, depression and anxiety over the past decade, it's hard not to conclude that some drug- or alcohol-related accident may have been to blame. </P><P> </P><P>It's much like, most recently, British singer Amy Winehouse and the late, great Michael Jackson before her, who died after taking a fatal cocktail of propofol and two other drugs. Also like Jackson, Houston's sudden death &#8212; at the age of 48 &#8212; has stopped the world in its tracks, an enormous, one-of-a-kind musical flame forever extinguished. </P><P> </P><P>Even Jackson's brother, Jermaine &#8212; who was first introduced to Houston years ago by Clive Davis at the same Beverly Hills Hilton where the singer passed away &#8212; could not help but draw the comparison. In an interview with CNN overnight, he paid tribute to the two fallen musical giants. "They shared a lot of success in the late '80s and they were great friends," he said. "I'm happy and honored to have been a part of their lives." </P><P> </P><P>And oh, what lives they led: Like Jackson &#8212; who died at just 50 years old, after years of struggling with personal demons &#8212; Houston, too, had an intensely profound and everlasting impact on the world of entertainment. </P><P> </P><P>Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and countless other chart-topping entertainers have all name-checked her as their musical mentor, icon and inspiration: To date, she is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with more than 170 million albums, songs and videos sold. </P><P> </P><P>In her lifetime, Houston achieved what precious few of them have or ever will &#8212; stacking an astonishing 415 awards, including six Grammys, two Emmys, 22 American Music Awards, 30 <i>Billboard</i> Awards. </P><P> </P><P>Her voice, in its prime, was a national treasure. </P><P> </P><P>"X Factor" mastermind Simon Cowell may have summed it up the best: On "Piers Morgan Tonight," he said, "She was one of the greatest voices in our lifetime. Whitney was the number one singer that other singers want to emulate. People like that can't be manufactured. They've either got, it or they don't." </P><P> </P><P>He added, "You will always remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news." </P><P> </P><P>Like Michael before her, gone too soon. </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:733107/cp~id%3D1679030%26vid%3D733107%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A733107%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P><b>MTV News' Sway and James Montgomery will be live from the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammys</a> red carpet tonight starting at 5 p.m. ET to get reactions from music's biggest stars on the death of Whitney Houston. "Dr. Murray is confident that the Court of Appeal will vindicate him." </P><P> </P><P>Following the guilty verdict, Murray's lead defense lawyer Ed Chernoff told CNN, "What matters most right now is trying to keep Dr. Murray from taking up a prison cell in this community.
