Britney Spears 'X Factor' Rumors Are 'Nonsense,' Simon Cowell Says
'She's got her confidence up. Once people give her a chance, I think people are really going to get her,' Cowell says of new judge.

<P>Simon Cowell is clearly feeling better — after missing <a href="/news/articles/1687133/x-factor-judges-performances-fighting.jhtml">"The X Factor" auditions in Kansas City, Missouri,</a> due to a bout of bronchitis — and he's talking <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>.</P><P>Cameramen from <a href="http://www.x17online.com/celebrities/simon_cowell/simon_cowell_says_britney_spears_not_unstable_claims_he_is_video_061412.php" target="_blank">X17</a> caught up with Cowell while he was riding in his town car in Beverly Hills, and they found the oft-testy reality-show judge and music executive to be in a particularly good mood. Cowell addressed a variety of tabloid rumors regarding Spears — namely that she's had some issues on set and that she's shaping up to be one of the tougher judges.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Spears Explains Why She Wanted To Be A Part Of 'X Factor'" id="vid:769620" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>When a cameraman asked whether "Britney's too unstable" to judge "X Factor," Cowell responded, "No, she's not unstable. I'm the one who's unstable! She's working out great. All these reports that we've fallen out are nonsense. She's doing a great job."</P><P>Cowell's car then pulls away, but again comes to a stop in traffic, allowing the paparazzi to continue his questioning. Asked whether Spears was his favorite judge, Cowell said, "There's only two girls," referring to Demi Lovato, and went on to jokingly admit that he is his own favorite of all time. "Yeah, I'd say Simon Cowell is a great guy," he quipped. "Very good looking."</P><P>Pressed further about Spears, Cowell offered more praise for the pop singer. "Like I said, she's been amazing. She's really taking time to learn how to do this," he continued. "She's got her confidence up. Once people give her a chance, I think people are really going to get her. It will be a big surprise. She's a tough judge."</P><P>As tough as the famously direct Cowell? "I'm a pussycat," he said playfully as his car pulled away.</P><P>We guess all that talk that <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20602881,00.html" target="_blank">Spears has been "incredibly tough"</a> on contestants might not be far from the truth. For her part, Spears responded to those rumors herself, taking to <a href="https://twitter.com/britneyspears/status/212289663422042112" target="_blank">Twitter</a> to say, "It's all tough love ... "Mark Wahlberg and I, we've been working on a script for a long time now... "I would love to do a Michael Jackson episode," Amber Riley told MTV News at the time. "You know, it's so many [songs that I love], but my favorite song by him is 'Human Nature.' I love that song." </P><P> </P><P>While Riley seemed psyched about the opportunity, castmate Jenna Ushkowitz found the possibility a little more daunting. We've definitely caught the Olympics fever here at MTV News and have been hard-pressed to pull our eyes away from all the action, and we're not alone. Thanks to a slew of enthusiastic tweets from our favorite celebrities, it's obvious the fever has spread to the likes of Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Pink, particularly after the U.S. gymnastics team won their gold medal Tuesday evening (July 31).</P><P>"Those girls are tearing the floor up for the USA! #Olympics," Lady Gaga <a href="https://twitter.com/ladygaga/status/230501177014493184" target="_blank">tweeted</a>. <P>It's been an impressive run for Team U.S.A. over in London. As the <a href="/news/articles/1691023/olympics-carly-rae-jepsen-austin-mahone.jhtml">Summer Olympics</a> continue to captivate the world, event after event, it was a girl who has been nicknamed "The Flying Squirrel" who won not only the gold in the women's gymnastics all-around final competition on Thursday, but also the <i>hearts</i> of some of the biggest stars in entertainment.</P><P>What makes Gabby Douglas' win even more impressive is that the 16-year-old is the first African-American woman to take home the honor, a feat that has earned her major kudos from some major players in the music world and beyond. Kelly Rowland spoke to MTV News earlier this week, and she showed love to the soon-to-be gold medalist, proudly exclaiming, "Gymnastics! Gabby Douglas! Britney Spears Would Have 'Loved' to Join 'American Idol'
Spears also says she and fellow host Demi Lovato bring a 'whole new energy' to 'The X Factor' in an interview with Zap2it.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> may be getting pretty comfortable in her seat on "The X Factor" judges' panel, but it seems that if <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1689794/american-idol-jennifer-lopez-steven-tyler-replacement.jhtml">Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez</a> had vacated their "American Idol" seats a little sooner, Spears may have considered joining the panel on her now rival show.</P><P>In an interview with <a href="http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/07/the-x-factors-britney-spears-would-have-loved-judging-american-idol.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitterhttp://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/07/the-x-factors-britney-spears-would-have-loved-" target="_blank">Zap2it</a>, Spears admitted that she "would have loved" to appear on "American Idol." But fear not, "X Factor" fans, Spears is ready for her big debut on September 12.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Spears Explains Why She Wanted To Be A Part Of 'X Factor'" id="vid:769620" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Spears, who recently wrapped up audition rounds, feels that she and fellow <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1685004/demi-lovato-x-factor-judge.jhtml">new judge, Demi Lovato</a>, are bringing something special to the revamped show. "I feel like it brings a whole new energy to the show, definitely," Spears said. "Nicole [Scherzinger] and Paula [Abdul] were really great, but to have such a dramatic change, I'll bet this even made Simon [Cowell] and L.A. [Reid] nervous."</P><P>It seems that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1687468/britney-spears-simon-cowell-x-factor-judge.jhtml">Spears has calmed Cowell's nerves</a>, but her next challenge will be to win over the viewers.</P><P>Just last week, we got our first glimpse of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1689403/britney-spears-x-factor-promo.jhtml">Spears in the judge's seat</a> when a 17-second promo from the show was released. Spears showed off a sassy, critical side, but she admits that she understands what the contestants are going through.</P><P>"I would be extremely nervous, probably, if I'd really never done anything before and it was my first time to perform in front of 4,000 people," she said. "I'm sure it's pretty nerve-racking."</P>

Britney Spears Demo Leaked By 'X Factor' Castoff

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> is busy traveling the U.S. in search of singers who have "The X Factor," but one rejected contestant (and former Spears backup singer) isn't handling his dismissal from the show all that well, releasing a previously unheard Spears demo and hitting out at the singer on Facebook.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Spears Explains Why She Wanted To Be A Part Of 'X Factor'" id="vid:769620" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Singer Don Philip <a href="http://www.entertainmentwise.com/news/80415/LISTEN-Britney-Spears-Teams-Up-With-X-Factor-Reject-On-Leaked-Track-" target="_blank">released the track</a>, originally titled "Pleasure You," on Wednesday on his SoundCloud. The singer — who duetted with Spears on the ballad "I Will Still Love You" off her debut album, <i>... Baby One More Time</i> — also appears on "Pleasure You." <a href="http://www.digitalspy.com/music/s141/the-x-factor-us/news/a391696/britney-spears-song-featuring-x-factor-usa-reject-emerges-listen.html" target="_blank">Digital Spy</a> reports that the dance track is believed to be from a 2010 studio session for Spears' most recent album, the well-received <i>Femme Fatale.</i></P><P>Philip recently had an <a href="/news/articles/1687704/britney-spears-x-factor-partner-reunion.jhtml">emotional reunion with Spears</a> while auditioning for "X Factor" in San Francisco. The pop star reportedly recognized her former collaborator immediately and became emotional when Philip began crying onstage after what he has himself since admitted was a weak audition. She remained professional, however, and sided with her fellow judges in removing Philip from the competition.</P><P>He later took to <a href="http://www.wenn.com/all-news/x-factor-reject-takes-aim-at-former-duet-partner-britney-spears/" target="_blank">his Facebook</a> to explain why his audition went so poorly, and he also took a shot at Spears in the process. "Back to real life ... all my demons released ... I totally crocked when the pressure was on ... at least I didn't shave my head," he wrote. "My vocal [cords] tightened up like a snake around a mouse."</P><P>It is unclear whether Philip's vocal originally appeared on the "Pleasure You" demo or whether it was added later without Spears' knowledge.</P><P>The pop star has reportedly settled into her role as judge on "The X Factor" quite nicely. Talking to a paparazzi cameraman in Los Angeles in June, <a href="/news/articles/1687468/britney-spears-simon-cowell-x-factor-judge.jhtml">Simon Cowell said of Spears</a>, "She's been amazing. She's really taking time to learn how to do this. She's got her confidence up. Once people give her a chance, I think people are really going to get her. It will be a big surprise. She's a tough judge."</P><P>"The X Factor" returns to Fox on September 12.</P>

Robert Plant And Alison Krauss Win Grammy Album Of The Year

<P>"I'm bewildered," <MTVNLINK type="artist" id="14245">Robert Plant</MTVNLINK> said onstage as he accepted the <MTVNLINK type="news" id="1604580">Grammy Album of the Year award</MTVNLINK> with <MTVNLINK type="artist" id="506074">Alison Krauss</MTVNLINK> on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday."</P><P>He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because <i>Raising Sand,</i> which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammy</a> album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.</p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:338316" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D338316" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p></P><P>You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his <MTVNLINK type="artist" id="993">Led Zeppelin</MTVNLINK> days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history.</P><P>Really, she's the key to <i>Sand</i>'s success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music — so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, <i>Sand</i> was released.</P><P>And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain.</P><P>And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on <i>Sand.</i> His arrangements are sparse — giving the two voices ample room to breathe — yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project ... and it's certainly justified.</P><P>To date, <i>Sand</i> has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year — "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.</P><P>One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album.</P><P>"At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. ... Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" <i>New York Times</i> music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really <i>good</i> record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards." </P>
